If you have a Bush administration official hastily visiting you because your plan for the homeless is too reactionary... might be... the most backward, incompetent, and callous Mayor in the history of New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Concerned about Mayor Ray Nagin's plan to usher homeless people into a military-style barrack, the federal government's "homeless czar" said he will visit the city Monday to ask Nagin to consider longer-term approaches to the problem.

Phillip Mangano, executive director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, said on Friday he will meet with Nagin and local homeless assistance groups to determine if there is another method that "improves the health concerns in the central city of New Orleans.

"My personal experience with those types of camps is the quality of public health deteriorates over time," Mangano said, referring to a colony of 150 people Nagin wants to move into the barrack from a downtown stretch of five blocks.

It would be nice if the Fed would have released some of that FEMA money the city is due, so the problem could be permanently addressed.

It woudl have been nice the NAgin had moved al little quickley, in stead of "kina allowing the situation" to develop.

Hey, when the UN starts dissing part of your country, you gotta bring the hammer down somewhere, some way...

...the question is, how exactly will that tool be brought to bear?

the president has been pretty comfortable shrugging off the UN so far.
