Kudos to Elie

Lolis Eric Elie of the Times Picayune wrote a great column today.

Thanks.

HUD has been demolishing the Lafitte public housing development without a demolition permit.

HUD responds that they are only doing asbestos abatement work.

But Elie properly buts HUD in its place by describing the ways their "abatement" actually amounts to outright demolition.

Because HUD is removing the terra cotta roof tiles, they are exposing the rest of the building to further damage from rain and further reducing the possibility to building rehabilitation.

He includes a money quote from Walter Gallas, of the National Trust for Historic Preservation:

"If HUD is telling you that this is some kind of asbestos abatement, I'd like to see where there is asbestos in terra cotta tile and in the roof decking."
